Choosing between marble and granite is one of the most common decisions in Gulf kitchen design. Both are natural stone, both look premium, but they behave very differently in this climate and in daily use. Here is a practical comparison, without the marketing talk.
The short answer
Marble wins on looks, granite wins on practicality. If the countertop is for a kitchen that gets real cooking, granite is the safer choice. If it is for a feature island or a bar area with light use, marble can work beautifully with proper care.
Marble: elegance with conditions
Marble is softer and more porous than granite. It stains easily – coffee, tea, lemon juice and even some cleaning products can leave marks if they sit on the surface. It scratches more easily, and in the Gulf heat, direct sunlight can affect some colored marbles over time. It also needs sealing, and the seal needs to be renewed every year or two. That said, marble has a depth and veining that nothing else matches. White marble (Indian Makrana or imported Italian varieties) remains the first choice for luxury interiors across the region.
Granite: built for daily life
Granite is harder and denser. It handles hot pots, knives and acidic foods without complaint. It needs very little maintenance – a simple seal at installation and normal cleaning after that. The color range is wide: from the famous black granites of Karnataka (Black Galaxy, Absolute Black) to grey, brown and green varieties. In the Gulf, where kitchens see heavy use and strong cleaning products, granite is the more forgiving material.

As a rough guide for material only (FOB, before freight and duty): Indian granite typically ranges from $15 to $60 per square meter depending on color and grade. Marble ranges wider – from about $20 per square meter for common Indian white up to $100 or more for premium imported varieties. Finished work (cutting, edge profiling, installation) is quoted separately by the fabricator.
