Black Galaxy is one of the most popular granites to come out of India. It is a black stone from Karnataka with small gold and copper flecks that sparkle in light. It shows up in kitchens, bathrooms, flooring and facades across the Gulf. But not all Black Galaxy is the same, and the price difference between grades is real.
Where it comes from
Black Galaxy is quarried in the Chamarajanagar and Kanakapura areas of Karnataka, in southern India. The stone is cut into slabs, polished and exported through ports like Chennai, Mangalore and Mundra. Because it is Indian stone, buying direct from Indian exporters is the most common route for Gulf buyers.
What the grades mean
The main thing that separates one slab from another is the distribution of the sparkle. Top grade has dense, even flecks across the whole surface. Lower grades have patchy sparkle or areas that look plain black. Polish quality and color consistency across slabs matter just as much. When you buy a container, the slabs should come from the same lot, or you can end up with visible differences between countertops in the same project.
What it costs
As a guide, FOB India prices for Black Galaxy slabs typically fall between $15 and $40 per square meter depending on grade and thickness (2 cm or 3 cm). A 20-foot container holds roughly 250 to 300 square meters of 2 cm slabs. The price you see in Dubai showrooms is usually two to three times the FOB price once freight, duty and margin are added.
What to check before you order
- Ask for video of the actual lot, not stock photos
- Check that all slabs come from one production batch
- Confirm thickness: 2 cm is standard, 3 cm is heavier and stiffer
- Ask about the rejection policy for slabs with cracks or color mismatch
- Get a physical sample and compare it with the shipment photos
